We discussed this with Matja\u017e Poga\u010dnik<\/strong>, a long-time beekeeper, certified NVQ apitherapist, innovator, and author of the Apitherapeutic Manual<\/a> for hive air inhalation \u2013 from the idea to a successful apitherapeutic activity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Why did you decide to write an apitherapeutic manual?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

A lot of information about apitherapy can be found today, but there is much less practical knowledge on how to actually perform it.<\/p>\n\n

Beekeepers often know what apitherapy is and the potential that hive air holds, but they do not know how to start. What devices do they need? How should the space be set up? How should a user be received? How long should the inhalation last? How should the equipment be cleaned?<\/p>\n\n

The manual <\/a>was created to gather all this information in one place and offer beekeepers a clear path from the initial idea to providing apitherapeutic activities.<\/p>\n\n

Who is the manual intended for?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Primarily for beekeepers who wish to upgrade their apiary with an additional activity, but also for apitherapists who already work with clients and want to carry out their work in a more structured way.<\/p>\n\n

The manual is designed to be used by beginners, while also containing enough concrete information to serve as reference material for more experienced practitioners.<\/p>\n\n

What else can a beekeeper offer today besides honey?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

An apiary has much more potential than we often realise.<\/p>\n\n

In addition to honey, propolis, and other bee products, we can also offer the experience of the bee environment and apitherapeutic services.<\/p>\n\n

One of the most interesting options is hive air inhalation<\/strong>, where the user breathes air directly from the bee hive using special equipment.<\/p>\n\n

This can be a very interesting upgrade to a beekeeping business, especially for beekeepers who want to offer visitors something different.<\/p>\n\n

How does an ordinary apiary become an apitherapeutic space?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

It is not necessary to start with a large-scale project.<\/p>\n\n

An apitherapeutic space can be very simple, with a single inhalation point, or more developed to accommodate several users.<\/p>\n\n

Above all, it is important that it is functional, pleasant and correctly designed.<\/p>\n\n

The manual<\/a> presents various layout options and concrete examples of floor plans, making it easier for beekeepers to visualise how they could arrange their space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

What is most important when it comes to hive air inhalation?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

It is very important that inhalation does not take place at random.<\/p>\n\n

The practitioner must know how to prepare the user, how to use the equipment correctly, how long the inhalation should last and how to monitor the user’s well-being.<\/p>\n\n

This is precisely why the manual contains clear protocols that help establish a structured and repeatable way of working.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Which devices play a key role in this?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

One of the main devices is the API AEROSOL II<\/a><\/strong>, designed for the controlled inhalation of air from the bee hive.<\/p>\n\n

This is a device that allows the beekeeper to deliver hive air to the user in a practical way.<\/p>\n\n

Another important device is the Propo Steam<\/a><\/strong>, which is used for propolis evaporation.<\/p>\n\n

Both devices are presented in more detail in the manual, along with instructions for preparation, use and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n

Why is there so much emphasis on protocols in apitherapy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Because good apitherapy is about more than just the device.<\/p>\n\n

It is important to know which procedures to use, in what order, how long each inhalation should last, and how to adapt it to the purpose of the visit.<\/p>\n\n

Protocols help the practitioner work with greater confidence and organisation, while providing the user with a more professional experience.<\/p>\n\n

What about hygiene and safety?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

This is one of the most important parts.<\/p>\n\n

All equipment that comes into contact with the user must be properly cleaned and disinfected. Correct storage of equipment and knowledge of contraindications are also essential.<\/p>\n\n

The manual<\/a> therefore also includes guidelines on safety, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, and the basic legal and ethical aspects of practising apitherapy.<\/p>\n\n

What advice would you give to a beekeeper who is considering apitherapy but doesn’t know where to start?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

First, they should inform themselves thoroughly and think about what they want to offer.<\/p>\n\n

There is no need to do everything at once. You can start with a single inhalation point and basic equipment, and then gradually develop the activity.<\/p>\n\n

Above all, it is important that you have clear knowledge, the correct procedure, and high-quality equipment.<\/p>\n\n

This is precisely the main purpose of the manual \u2013 to save the beekeeper a lot of guesswork and show them concrete steps.<\/p>\n\n

Does the manual also complement practical training?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Yes. I also conduct a two-day certification for the use of Medikoel’s apitherapeutic products.<\/p>\n\n

There, participants gain hands-on experience in using the devices, performing individual procedures, and organising apitherapeutic activities.<\/p>\n\n

The manual and the training therefore complement each other very well.<\/p>\n\n

What do you want a beekeeper to take away from the manual?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Above all, the awareness that their apiary can offer much more than just honey.<\/p>\n\n

If they have the knowledge, the right equipment, and a well-defined way of working, they can develop a new apitherapeutic story from an existing apiary.<\/p>\n\n
