Blood pressure is the force that blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels through which it flows. The heart is constantly pushing blood through the blood vessels, and the blood is pressing against the walls of the blood vessels. This creates pressure or pressure. There is systolic (systole = contraction) or upper blood pressure, which is measured when the heart is squeezing blood into the blood vessels, and diastolic (diastole = expansion) or lower blood pressure, which is measured when the heart muscle is resting. The amount of blood pressure depends on the amount of blood the heart squeezes out of the left ventricle into the main outflow tract (aorta) and the resistance of the blood vessels. The more constricted the blood vessels, the higher the blood pressure. It is expressed in millimetres of mercury (mm Hg).

Why measure your blood pressure at home?
High blood pressure has been shown to cause damage to blood vessels and major vital organs. High blood pressure is a dangerous disease that is among the dangerous independent risk factors for stroke, heart attack, kidney and heart failure and atherosclerosis with all its consequences. Regularly measuring and recording your blood pressure helps to give an overall picture of your condition and is a useful tool for your doctor. When measuring at home, you also avoid
White Coat Syndrome , where the excitement of the doctor’s surgery often results in a blood pressure that is higher than what the individual actually has. Plus, regular monitoring of your blood pressure levels gives you a boost:

  • towards a healthy lifestyle
  • to limit salt in the diet
  • to take your medicines consistently

to reduce the psychological burden of illness and thus better participate in the treatment of the disease;

All physical activity, excitement, stress, eating, drinking, smoking, body posture and many other activities or factors (including measurement of
blood pressure), affect blood pressure values. This makes it virtually impossible to obtain identical blood pressure readings, even if several consecutive measurements were taken over a shorter period of time. Blood pressure also varies depending on the time of day. The highest value usually occurs during the day and the lowest usually around midnight. Typically, it starts to increase around 3:00 am and reaches peak levels during the day, when most people are awake and active.

The SE 6500 supra-arm blood pressure monitor measures diastolic and systolic blood pressure and heart rate using a non-invasive technique. This is done by means of an inflatable cuff that the user wraps around the upper arm. The cuff circumference is limited to between 22cm-48cm.
